New year festival in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's Sinhalese and Tamils celebrate New Year each April with a series of feasts and religious services. Unlike many New Year celebrations that begin at midnight, the timing of the start of the New Year is determined by astrologers who calculate the precise time. There is also a period of a few hours between the end of one year and the start of the next which is known as the 'neutral period' during which many attend religious services to show their devotion to Loard Buddha/God. Traditionally the new year has been a harvest festival, with Kiri-Bath (Milk Rice) being prepared with the rice from the new crop. In addition to religious ceremonies, the New Year celebrations are characterised by lavish feasts, fireworks displays, games and parties. You are welcome to enjoy some traditional Sri lankan games on this occasion.
